Update:March 3, 2014
On July 20 (Sat.) and 21 (Sun.), the annual 2013 Mie Kids Eco Fair was organized in the Suzuka Foothills Research Park where ICETT is located. In fine weather, there were some 4,000 visitors to this two-day event.
The event was designed for children living in Mie Prefecture to learn about the environment through amusing experiences. It also provided the children with an opportunity to develop an interest in or awareness of the environment, thus encouraging them to obtain knowledge of the environment and get involved in environmental conservation. About 50 organizations and groups exhibited and there were experience-based and other kinds of booths, including handicrafts, displays, and drinking and eating, while fun stage performances also helped the event become successful along with these booths.
ICETT took advantage of its markedly international characteristics to provide opportunities for children to answer quizzes regarding national flags and souvenirs given by former participants from different countries, and to make miniature national flags for the lunch. There were some kids who barely knew katakana characters, but they all enjoyed writing the names of countries.
Besides these amusements, ICETT also conducted quizzes concerning environmental issues and showed documents of the Yokkaichi pollution and a recorded TV program, “Close-up Gendai: PM2.5 flying over from China to Japan”, which presented the activities of ICETT. Thus, ICETT offered an opportunity for children and their parents to learn together about the environment.
According to questionnaires, submitted by the visitors, the fulfillment and satisfaction levels of the whole event have heightened year by year and a larger portion of visitors also attended this event the previous year. ICETT is determined to make greater efforts to change and update the displays and come up with new ideas so that this year’s visitors as well as future visitors will also enjoy themselves at the eco fair next year.
