Opening of JICA Group Training “Capacity Building for Policy Staff regarding the Kyoto Mechanisms”

JICA Group Training “Capacity Building for Policy Staff regarding the Kyoto Mechanisms” started on 2 July 2010. ICETT has been implementing this training course since it started in 1998. This year, seven government officials and an engineer from private company from Brazil, Kenya, Indonesia, Thailand, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan participate in the 44-day training course from 2 June to 16 July.
The Kyoto Mechanisms, including Emission Trading, the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), and Joint Implementation (JI), are introduce to the Kyoto Protocol at the COP3 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change held in 1997 as “flexible” mechanisms for the countries with targets of reducing greenhouse gas emission to achieve this target. This training course aims at promoting the Kyoto Mechanisms by enhancing the understanding of those who are in charge of the Kyoto Mechanisms-related work in governments and private organizations on the Kyoto Mechanisms. It also highlights how to utilize the Kyoto Mechanisms for realizing sustainable development of developing countries, which is a substantial matter for these countries as well as combating global warming.
At the opening ceremony held on 3 July, Mr. Muniz Alves Eagles from Brazil made an address representing all the participants, and showed his highly motivated attitude toward the training course.
The participants are expected to gain deeper and practical knowledge of and perspectives on the Kyoto Mechanisms through lectures, site visits, discussions and exercises, so that they can make actions for promoting the Kyoto Mechanisms. (Naoko)
