【Report】 "Invitation Programme of Key Persons on Food Waste to Energy in the Philippines" was successfully finished.

Abstracts

International Center for Environmental Technology Transfer (ICETT) organized the Invitation Programme on Food Waste-to-Energy (WTE) for key persons in the Philippines. The programme was held for seven days from October 27 (Sunday) to November 2 (Saturday), and the participants included government officials from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Metro Manila, its regional offices, local government units (LGUs), and business leaders from the Province of Pampanga.

The programme focused on food WTE technologies, and approved as METI-AOTS Human Resource Development Programme towards Zero Emission.

Participants visited relevant companies and organizations in Mie and Aichi Prefectures, and attended lectures and discussions led by Japanese experts at ICETT. On the final day, participants exchanged views on challenges and opportunities for future technology transfer from Japan to the Philippines.

Background and Objectives

The Philippines is experiencing rapid economic growth, which has brought significant environmental challenges. One important issue is the management of organic waste, particularly food waste. In Pampanga, the programme’s target area, much of this waste is dumped untreated in landfills, where it generates biogas (methane) and contributes to global warming.

In response, DOST has set goals to promote food WTE policies and strategies, aiming to expand the adoption of these technologies among local companies and LGUs.

This programme was initiated at DOST’s request to deepen participants' understanding of Japanese food WTE technologies and related administrative policies. It serves as a foundation for future technology transfer from Japan to the Philippines.
