(3) Re-creation of Local Environment

4.Approach to Environmental Regeneration

The reclamation site created by the Minamata Bay Bottom Sludge Treatment Program has been dedicated to the regeneration of the local environment. Hydrophilic embankments, seaside greenery, a bamboo garden, and other facilities were established on the site. In addition, in December 1994, Minamata City established the Minamata Disease Municipal Museum to make the people aware of its troubled past, and in August 1994, Kumamoto Prefecture established the Environmental Education and Intelligence Center to promote environmental concern. In addition, they have held the International Environmental Convention for scientific solution of diversified impacts of heavy metal pollution associated with industrial activities such as Minamata Disease.
