The 1st ICETT Resource Circulation Seminar "Toward a New Stage of e-waste Resource Recycling" will be held in fiscal year R7 (on-site and online).

Background of the project

International Center for Environmental Technology Transfer (ICETT) has been holding the ICETT Resource Circulation Seminar since fiscal year 2024 to share information with companies and organizations in the Chubu area and other regions to help them promote their resource recycling efforts, given the growing importance of promoting "resource recycling" as efforts toward a circular economy become more active worldwide. The ICETT Resource Circulation Seminar has been held since FY2024 with the aim of contributing to the promotion of resource recycling efforts by companies and organizations, mainly in the Chubu region, through the sharing of information to companies and organizations.

In FY2024, three seminars were held on the themes of "Resource Recycling of Electrical and Electronic Equipment Waste (e-waste) in ASEAN," "Resource Recycling of Automobiles," and "Resource Recycling of Textiles". The first ICETT Resource Recycling Seminar in FY2025 will be held on the theme of "Resource Recycling of e-waste" in Japan.

Background and Objectives:

In Japan, where resources such as metals and petroleum are imported, e-waste is regarded as a "urban mine," a valuable resource, and legal systems and technological development have been implemented. Under these circumstances, the Home Appliance Recycling Law obliges manufacturers and importers to recycle four types of home appliances, many of which are collected and have achieved a high recycling rate.

On the other hand, although there is a recycling law for small home appliances, the recovery rate is still low, and the ratio of heat recovery in waste plastic recycling is high, and there is a need for further promotion and sophistication of resource recycling. In addition, from the perspective of resource constraints such as global demand for resources and rising geopolitical risks, there is an urgent need to recover metals such as rare metals and base metals.

Thus, the seminar will be held to share with companies and organizations the current status and policy direction of e-waste recycling, which is undergoing a period of change, as well as examples of new resource recycling in recent years.
