Palau News Letter Vol.3] Promotion of Separate Discharge System in Babeldaob Island, Palau (JICA Grassroots Technical Cooperation Project)
We would like to provide you with an update on the JICA Grassroots Technical Cooperation Project "Promotion of Separate Discharge System in Babeldaob Island, Palau" which is being implemented in Palau.
What is the Resource Recovery Promotion Team?
In this issue, we will introduce the "Resource Recovery Promotion Team (Community Type)".
In this project, "Resource Recovery Promotion Teams" of "School Education Type" and "Community Type" were established. In the "school education type," teachers learn environmental education methods and promote sorting and emission activities mainly at elementary schools, while in the "community type," residents in the target area promote sorting and emission activities while raising their awareness.
The "Community Type" activity area is the provinces of Gappan and Aimerique, two of the ten provinces of Babeldaob, the largest island in Palau. The "community-based" team members meet regularly to discuss and review various ways to promote separate emissions in the two provinces. We learn from each other's precedents of sorting and discharging at stations in the villages of Ibboban in Gappan and Mongami in Eymerik for three years starting in 2018, and we discuss daily how to roll it out across the state. In order to make concrete plans, such as where and how many stations to set up, basic information such as maps and residential layouts are necessary, but Palau does not have such information. Although unfamiliar with the process, the team members gathered information on the Internet, and then went around steadily by foot to create a map and complete a housing layout map. The team members are working step by step to achieve the goal of sorting and discharging waste in the target areas.
The "Community Type" team consisted of officials from the Department of Solid Waste Management, Bureau of Public Works, Department of Public Infrastructure, Industry and Commerce (commonly known as BPW), which has been working with ICETT since 2018, as well as state government officials from the provinces of Gappan and Aymerique and a non-profit organization that is also a team member of the "School Education Type" team. The team name is "SELKMAI" in Palauan. It means "crab" and is the mascot of the two states. It is an interesting name.

Job Description: Responsible for developing and producing environmental education programs and tools to inform the community about the importance of proper solid waste management practices that improve the quality of solid waste management.
First of all, I would like to thank ICETT and JICA for their continued support and guidance throughout this project. I am honored to have had the opportunity to participate in this project. The much guidance and specific knowledge I have learned so far will help the Solid Waste Management Authority to overcome the most difficult challenges it will face in the future. This project has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. I learned how to educate everyone from the elderly to children about the importance of proper waste management. I am very excited to see the success of this project and how it will affect our country in the future.
Please look forward to the next issue of Palau News!
