Palau News Letter Vol.2] Project for Promotion of Separate Discharge System in Babeldaob Island, Republic of Palau (JICA Grassroots Technical Cooperation Project)

We would like to report on the recent progress of the "Promotion of Separate Discharge System in Babeldaob Island, Palau (JICA Grassroots Technical Cooperation Project)," which started in February 2023!

What is the Resource Recovery Promotion Team?

In this issue, we will introduce the "Resource Recovery Promotion Team (School Education Type)".

The project works with the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Industry and Commerce, which is in charge of waste management in Palau, and the Ministry of Education, which has jurisdiction over public schools, to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills by educating residents and elementary schools in the target areas and by separating and collecting waste from Palauan households.
This is where the "Resource Recovery Promotion Team," which will be a core member of the project's activities, will play an active role. The "Resource Recovery Promotion Team (School Education Type)" was formed to raise awareness and promote waste separation and discharge at eight public elementary schools on the largest island in Palau, Babeldaob Island. The name of the team is "BO" in Palauan. The name of the team was decided to be "BOBIIAIKING" in Palauan language. It means "sorting" in Palauan.
Through discussions at meetings and other means, team members will first deepen the understanding of school teachers themselves about the need for environmental education from childhood, and then aim to implement environmental education at their own educational sites. This will also lead to the protection of Palau's rich natural environment. Immediately, in April, team members observed the sorting and discharging of waste at a prior example station to deepen their understanding of the purpose and content of the activity.
