Report】ASEAN Country Training Program "Waste Management for Marine Litter Control" (2nd Distance Training)

The International Center for Environmental Technology Transfer (ICETT) conducted the ASEAN Country Training Program "Waste Management for Marine Litter Control" (2nd Distance Training) from November 1 to 26, 2021, online, under contract with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

This training program was designed to improve the capacity of the ASEAN region to combat marine plastic litter. Administrative officers in the field of waste management from Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Thailand, as well as officials from the ASEAN Secretariat based in Indonesia, participated in the training program.

The second distance learning course was conducted as a continuation of the FY2020 ASEAN Country Training Course "Waste Management for Marine Litter Control" (conducted from February 1 to 8, 2021), which was conducted online since the participants could not come to Japan due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection. Unfortunately, the training was conducted online again, but we made every effort to provide a similar atmosphere as the training in Japan through live lectures, plant tours, workshops, and introduction of Japanese culture.

Training Overview

  • As one of the priorities of this training course on marine plastic litter countermeasures, we especially focused on plastic resource recycling in terrestrial areas, and conducted lectures and discussions related to this issue.
  • The lecture introduced Japan's legal system for plastic resource recycling, government strategies and policies for promoting resource recycling, voluntary efforts by companies, examples of technological development, and practical examples of environmental education.
  • The lecturers were members of councils of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of the Environment (MOE), companies that are pioneering efforts in the field of plastic resource recycling in Japan, and experts affiliated with universities.
  • The trainees gained new knowledge through the lectures and actively exchanged information and opinions with the lecturers, reviewed the policies and measures in their own countries, and deepened their consideration of how to apply what they learned in this training program to their own work. On the final day, the participants presented the results of their training. They also received comments and advice from experts at the presentation session, and their presentations were well received.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the lecturers from industry, government, and academia for their lectures, as well as JICA Chubu, JICA Headquarters, the ASEAN Secretariat, and other related organizations for their support and cooperation.
