FY2010 Environmental Conservation Seminar held in Tianjin, China

For three days from October 27 (Wed) to 29 (Fri), 2010, a Yokkaichi-commissioned Environmental Conservation Seminar focusing on soil pollution control was held in the City of Tianjin, China.
Tianjin, located in northeastern China, is one of four direct-controlled municipalities, with status equal to that of provinces or autonomous regions, along with Beijing, Shanghai, and Chongqing.
Tianjin has made great efforts in environmental conservation and, while the city has maintained an economic growth rate of over 10 % for the past few years, was designated by the government as a model city for environmental conservation in 2006.
Despite these circumstances, consideration has recently been given to urgent action against soil pollution in the city and other areas in China.
Therefore, “the improvement of soil pollution levels” is scheduled to be included in the twelfth five-year plan, which will start in 2011, drawn up by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.
ICETT has held an environmental conservation seminar in Tianjin as part of a Yokkaichi-commissioned program every year since 2001, and for the above-mentioned reason this year’s seminar featured soil pollution control. It was held at a multipurpose hall in the Environment Protection Bureau of Tianjin and attended by 56 officials and company staff engaged in environmental conservation.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the friendship-city affiliation between Yokkaichi and Tianjin (Memorial Day on October 28). The opening ceremony was attended by Yokkaichi Mayor Toshiyuki Tanaka, Chairman of Yokkaichi City Council Shinji Nakamori, Vice Director of the Standing Committee of the Tianjin People's Congress Li Ya Li, and Director-General of the Tianjin Environment Protection Bureau Yan DingZhong.
At the seminar, there were lectures held on the situation of Tianjin’s soil pollution control program, Japanese systems for soil pollution measures, the situation of soil pollution in Japan, pollution investigation and assessment methods, Japanese soil pollution prevention measures and restoration technologies. The lectures were followed by a question-and-answer session with many questions, which made the seminar quite successful. (Fukushima)
