FY2009 “Tianjin City Environmental Conservation Seminar” held in September

“Tianjin City Environmental Conservation Seminar,” on the theme of “NOx Pollution Control Measures” was commissioned by Yokkaichi city and held by ICETT in Tianjin for three days from September 1st (Tue) to September 3rd (Thu), 2009.
The city of Tianjin, in northeastern China, has a population of approximately 11,760,000 (as of the end of 2008) and spans an area of about 11,760 km2. Together with Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing, it is one of the four major municipalities in China with a ranking equal to that of a province or autonomous area.
Tianjin has been enjoying continued economic growth of over 10% annually for the past several years, with further growth expected in future, but still suffers serious environmental problems. In 2008, the average nitrogen dioxide (NO2) value here was 0.041 mg/m3 a year, remaining at levels beyond that stipulated in China’s National Standard II (0.04 mg/m3) (Source: 2008 Report on the State of Environment in Tianjin). In this situation, nitrogen dioxide control has become necessary in Tianjin.
ICETT has been holding an environmental conservation seminar in Tianjin every year since 2001, as a project commissioned by Yokkaichi city. Due to the above-mentioned background, the theme for this year’s seminar, held by ICETT, was “NOx pollution control measures.” The seminar was held in the Tianjin Environmental Protection Bureau multi-purpose hall.
The 50 participants were staff members involved with environmental measures, from government administration offices, enterprises, mainly power plants, and universities. The lectures covered atmospheric environmental conditions and control measures in Tianjin, the Air Pollution Control Law and Areawide Air Total Pollutant Load Control system of Japan, environmental conservation measures in power plants, global warming effect control measures, and the introduction of new energy. Comprehensive question and answer sessions were held.
Participants listened attentively to each lecture, and so many questions were presented in the comprehensive question and answer sessions that time ran short.
