JETRO-Commissioned “Demonstration Project for Diffusing Small Wind Power Generators in the Republic of the Philippines”

A Demonstration Project for Diffusing Small Wind Power Generators in the Republic of the Philippines was just completed as part of the JETRO (the Japan External Trade Organization) Expert Service Abroad for Improving Business Environments (JEXSA) for Fiscal 2009. In August 2009, this project was launched in cooperation with the Department of Science and Technology, or DOST, in the Philippines, where a bill for promoting renewable energy had passed through the national parliament and the introduction of clean energy had attracted much attention.
The project was designed to conduct demonstration tests in the Philippines of the adjustability of small 2000W wind power generators of Loopwing Co.,Ltd, with distinctive features like low noise and durability. ICETT had provided the company with assistance in technological development for the generators as part of the financial assistance project by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Additionally, the project had the purpose of sorting out technical and institutional problems for introducing and diffusing the small wind power generators into the country.
Last November, small wind power generators were installed in three different places such as the National Capital Region of Manila and Region IV, and data collection has been in progress there since. The electricity produced by the generators is planned to be used for lighting and bioreactors, which is expected to reduce the consumption of regular electricity.
On December 3 (Thur.), 2009, a seminar for promoting awareness held at the New World Hotel in Manila was attended by more than 120 participants from the central government, local governments, and private companies. They listened to the presentation about the demonstration project and to lectures on small wind power generators and renewable energy.
The project was covered by various local news organizations, which can be seen as a sign that there was great awareness of renewable energy among the people of the Philippines. We hope that the project will be a good opportunity for local people, who have been unrelated to environmental conservation, to receive information about and develop an interest in global environmental conservation.
