Industry-University Cooperation Seminar and Matching Event Held regarding Recovery and Recycling of Valuable Metals and Rare Earths

An Industry-University Cooperation Seminar and Matching Event Took Place regarding the Recovery and Recycling of Valuable Metals and Rare Earths.

On January 29, 2015, an environmental business seminar to promote cooperation between industries and universities was held in Nagoya as part of a local environmental business promotion program of the Chubu Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry. The seminar focused on the recovery and recycling of valuable metals and rare earths. It was intended to bring businesses and universities together in enhancing and producing lower-cost technologies which will be useful in the future to collect and recycle valuable metals from electronics or electric equipment and rare earth metals from eco-friendly vehicles.

The seminar was attended by as many as 90 people from companies and research institutes, which clearly showed that there is a high interest in environmental business including the recovery and recycling of valuable metals and rare earths.

The seminar had two sessions. In the first, four experts engaged in research and development of the relevant technologies delivered lectures about the situation right now, the problems and the latest innovations in this field.

The second session was a matching opportunity for participants from universities and companies, which own environmentally useful technology and knowhow. The participants were divided into two groups with different themes. In each group they discussed the current situation, unsolved problems and suggestions by researchers that might lead to solutions to the issues. There were valuable exchanges of opinions and information in both groups.

Ahead of this event, ICETT interviewed companies about the current and future situation of the relevant field, and technical and other problems in collecting and recycling valuable metals and rare earths. The experts answered questionnaires about their research details and their interest in cooperation between industry and academia. Some researchers cooperated with ICETT even in responding to more detailed questions. With the help of these experts and companies, the seminar was then organized.
